How to Fit – Athleisure Bottoms
Welcome! You’re about to learn how to find the athleisure bottom that’s the right size for you. To do so, you’ll be using your waist and hip measurements. If you’re ready, let’s begin. This presentation will only last a few minutes. There are several reasons why an athleisure bottom can be a great fashion choice. First, like each component of athleisure wear, it’s highly versatile. It can be worn at the office, at school, around town, or at home; and, it makes sense in the gym, in the yoga studio, or on a hiking trail. That’s because it can serve as business-casual attire, loungewear, or athletic apparel. Second, it’s available in a variety of silhouettes. Depending on your needs, you can find options with legs that extend to various points between the upper thighs and ankles. These include: shorts, bike pants, capris, and leggings. Third, though highly comfortable, an athleisure bottom also tends to be very durable. The comfort derives from a great deal of fabric elasticity, extra roominess in design, and/or flatter seams that minimize chafing. The increased durability results from the use of fabrics made with synthetic fibers, like spandex, or stronger, natural fibers. Fourth, depending on the style, it may incorporate multiple, special characteristics or abilities. Such traits may include: light reflectivity; wrinkle resistance; odor resistance; skin-temperature reduction; moisture wicking; and/or UV-radiation protection. Also, many of these bottoms are made with small, hidden pockets that can hold keys, cards, or money. And finally, an athleisure bottom can provide more than just comfort; it can add to an overall sense of well-being in the wearer. Worn in a variety of fitness and active social situations, it can help the wearer feel covered, customized, and confident. It may truly compliment one’s interactive experiences. Before we talk about sizing, here’s a couple of helpful tips. If you’re looking for a bottom that offers ultraviolet-radiation protection, look for styles with Ultraviolet Protection Factors – or UPFs - of 40 or higher. A UPF of 40 means that the garment’s fabric allows 1/40th, or 2.5%, of the UVA and UVB radiation hitting it to pass through. Such protection is considered excellent. And, if you’re looking for leggings, but want to prevent the legs from riding up, styles incorporating stirrups at their ends may be good options for you. Now it’s time to figure out which athleisure-bottom size is right for you. To do this, you’ll need to measure the lengths around your waist and hips. You’ll need a flexible tape measure and a mirror. You may also find it helpful to have a buddy assist you. Now, we’re ready to get down to business. It’s best to take off your pants when measuring, as the fabric gets in the way of accuracy. Place the tape measure around the smallest part of your waist, following your body’s natural indentation. If you’re not sure where your smallest part is located, bend to the side to find it. Make sure that the tape lies flatly, and parallel to the ground, all the way around your body. Pull it snugly to get an accurate measurement. Round the result, up or down, to the nearest whole inch. For example, if your measurement is 29 3/8”, round down to 29”. Or, if your measurement is 29 ½”, round up to 30”. Next, we’ll measure your hips. Stand with your legs together and place the tape measure around the fullest part of your hips. This should be approximately 7” below your waist. Make sure that it lies flatly, and parallel to the ground, all the way around your body. Again, round the result, up or down, to the nearest whole inch. For example, if your measurement is 39 3/8”, round down to 39”. Or, if your measurement is 39 ½”, round up to 40”. We’re almost done. The two measurements taken together determine the size of the garment. Find your waist and hip measurements on the chart and you’ll discover the corresponding athleisure-bottom size that’s right for you. For example, if your waist measures 33”, and your hips measure 42”, an average-size, extra-large, athleisure bottom will fit you well. If your waist and hip measurements don’t correspond to one garment size, match only your hip measurement to the corresponding garment size. The fabric in athleisure wear is very accommodating. That's it - now you’ll feel confident when looking for the athleisure bottom that's right for you.
